Embryo Adoption Agencies

The following is a summary of information provided to Wisconsin Fertility Institute regarding seven well-established embryo adoption agencies. We highly recommend confirming all information before proceeding with adoption, as information may have changed.  If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact the respective agency directly.

  1. Snowflakes Embryo Adoption

Agency Information: Licensed adoption agency based in California. Established in 1997. 306 babies born to date.

Cost: $12,000 to $14,000. $2,000 for additional matches if no pregnancy is achieved.

Recipients pay for: Mandatory home study, FET, post adoption embryo storage.

Agency covers: Transportation of embryos, additional screening/testing of donors, post adoption support.

Donor Requirements: No minimum number of embryos required. Any stage accepted. Successful prior pregnancy not required. Donor gametes are accepted. Positive infectious disease test are accepted.

Recipient Requirements: Must be in stable martial relationship for 3 years. No age limitations. Same sex couples only accepted if requested by donor. Single parents accepted. Surrogates accepted.

Known/Anonymous: Known and anonymous adoption is available.

Matching Criteria: Donors and recipients set own criteria. Gender selection is not available. Donors select first based upon family profile. Recipients can reject the match.

Transfers: Typically occur at recipient clinic, but can be done at clinic where embryos were created.

  1. Embryos Alive

Agency Information: Established in 2003 and based in Ohio. 60 babies born to date.

Cost: $300 application fee, total fee depends on number of embryos.

Recipients pay for: Shipping and tank rental, FET, repeat blood work or screenings.

Agency covers: N/A

Donor Requirements: No minimum number of embryos required. Any stage accepted. Prior successful pregnancy not required. Donor gametes accepted. Positive infectious disease test accepted.

Recipient Requirements: No marriage requirement. No age requirement. Single parents and surrogates accepted.

Known/Anonymous: Both open and anonymous adoption available.

Matching Criteria: Criteria set by donors. Gender selection is available. Adopters submit profile for donor with whom they want to be matched.

Transfers: Typically occurs at recipient clinic, but can be done at clinic where embryos were created.

  1. Embryo Adoption Services of Cedar Park

Agency Information: Established in 2008. Based in Washington. 11 babies born to date.

Cost: $5500. $1,400 additional for social worker to travel to do home study.

Recipients pay for: Additional screenings or testing of embryos, FET, post adoption embryo storage.

Agency covers: Transportation of embryos.

Donor Requirements: No minimum number of embryos required. Any stage accepted. Successful pregnancy not required. Donor gametes accepted. Positive infectious disease test are accepted.

Recipient Requirements: Must have been married 3 years. Mother must be less than 48 years old. Single and same sex couples only accepted if requested by donor. Surrogates not accepted.

Known/Anonymous: Known and anonymous adoption available.

Matching Criteria: Criteria set by donors and recipients. Gender selection is not available. Donors select first based on family profiles.

Transfers: Occurs at recipient clinic. 

  1. National Embryo Donation Center

Agency Information: Established in 2003. Based in Knoxville, TN. More than 550 babies born to date.

Cost: $7500.00.

Recipients pay for: FET, transportation of embryos, reimbursement to NEDC for screening and testing costs, home review.

Agency covers: Initial lab work and screening upon donation, initial cost of transporting embryos to NEDC, medical monitoring throughout first trimester.

Donor Requirements: No minimum number of embryos required. Any stage accepted. Successful pregnancy not required. Donor gametes accepted. Positive infectious disease test are accepted, but cannot be stored at NEDC.

Recipient Requirements: Must have been married 3 years. Wife cannot be older than 46. Combined age of parents cannot be more than 100. Same sex couples, single parents, and surrogates are not accepted.

Known/Anonymous: Anonymous, Open, and Semi-Open adoption is available. Open donors can reject match. Anonymous donors can set criteria, which NEDC will honor.

Matching Criteria: Matching criteria set by donors. Recipients select donor. Gender selection is not available.

Transfers: FET occurs at NEDC clinic in Knoxville, TN and Wisconsin Fertility Institute.

  1. Crystal Angels Embryo Adoption Services

Agency Information: Licensed adoption agency based in Texas. Founded in 2005. 12 babies born to date.

Cost: $9,500. $500 is refundable.

Recipients pay for: Screening and transportation costs over $1,250, home study, storage of remaining embryos.

Agency covers: Screening and transportation of embryos up to $1,250.

Donor Requirements: No minimum number of embryos required. Any stage accepted. Prior successful pregnancy not required. Donor gametes accepted. Must meet FDA requirements.

Recipient Requirements: No marriage length requirement. No standard age requirement. Same sex couples, single parents, and surrogates accepted.

Known/Anonymous: Open and anonymous adoption is available.

Matching Criteria: Criteria set by donors and recipients. Donors select first based on family profile. Recipients can reject the match. Gender selection is available.

Transfers: FET usually occurs at adoptive parent’s home clinic, but can occur at donor’s clinic.

  1. Adoption and Fertility Resources with Clinical Counseling Associates, Inc.

Agency Information: Founded in 2006. Operates locally in Kansas City. Accepts a limited number of clients from outside the Kansas City area. 24 babies born to date.

Cost: $10,000-$12,000 on average.

Recipients pay for: Home Study, FET, legal adoption, embryo storage.

Agency covers: N/A

Donor Requirements: Donors are referred to agency by clinics they partner with. Medical background is responsibility of the clinics. Donor gametes accepted.

Recipient Requirements: 2 year marriage requirement. Mother cannot be older than 45. Religion must be practiced in the home. Same sex couples if only requested by the donor. Single women and surrogates are accepted.

Known/Anonymous: Only open adoption. Anonymous adoption is not available.

Matching Criteria: Criteria set by donors and recipients. Donors select first based on family profile. Recipients can reject the match. Gender selection is not available.

Transfers: FET occurs at the clinic the embryos were created at. 

  1. Embryo Donation International

Agency Information: Program founded in 2001. Based in Fort Meyers, FL.

Cost: $7,980 to $9,331 for anonymous adoption, $13,868 for open adoption.

Recipients pay for: Cost of FET, recipient/donor evaluations, medications and monitoring, optional genetic testing, shipping fees, costs associated with travel to Florida.

Agency covers: N/A

Donor Requirements: No minimum number of embryos required. Any stage accepted. Successful pregnancy not required. Donor gametes accepted. Positive infectious disease test are accepted.

Recipient Requirements: No requirements on marital status. Priority is given to couples with no children. Same sex and singles are accepted.

Known/Anonymous: Anonymous, approved, and open adoptions available.

Matching Criteria: Recipients choose embryo. Matching criteria may be set by donors. With open adoption, donors can reject match.

Transfers: Occurs at EDI clinic in Fort Meyers, FL.
